Message from the Mayor
Dear Residents and Property Owners,
Once again, our community has stepped up and hit a ‘home run’, maybe even a ‘grand slam’.? Less than three weeks ago, we asked for assistance in funding a community support group. Our goal was $50,000 and we are now closing in on that goal.? Well done Sun Peaks!? Many thanks to those who stepped up.? I must confess that it has been?a very emotional experience to receive such strong support from Sun Peaks businesses and residents, some of you were so generous that you brought tears to my eyes.?If you n help, please kick us over the top!!
A group of enthusiastic residents set up ‘SPCommunityHelps’ on very short notice.?? SPCommunityHelps is there for those in the community who may need assistance over the next few months. The main focus of this volunteer group has been to establish a food bank type operation for residents. It is lled the ‘Cupboard’ and it has already opened its doors in Peaks West. The Community Helps group?is prepared to assist wherever there is a need.? They are very concerned about everyone’s personal wellbeing.? If you need a hand, contact SPCommunityHelps.? Phone confidentially?236-822-0550?or email ?firstname.lastname@example.org.?If you would like to donate food, please contact SPCommunityHelps.
The past month has not been easy for many Sun Peaks residents.? Most of us have always lived with some sense of security and an understanding of what will be going on next week, next month.? Never have our lives been so disrupted and our immediate futures so uncertain.??However, we will come out of this COVID-19?crisis by remaining positive about the future and by looking out for our neighbours and friends.
Our futures will become more obvious over the next month or so.? In the meantime, we need to accept that our personal and our community health, as well as prevention of the spread of the Corona virus are the immediate priorities.? Sun Peaks is doing better, those who were ill are well on the road to recovery.? Our regional property owners are generally heeding the ll of the Chief Provincial Medil Officer and most are staying away?for the time being.? By the way, there is some confusion about who is a resident.? Winter residents who have remained in Sun Peaks are still residents and you are avoiding unnecessary travel by remaining in Sun Peaks.
Our Health services are still open but you must ll for an appointment. 778-644-0635.? It is important to stay healthy, please, don’t neglect your personal health.
Over the coming weeks, we will hear more about how we return to our pre-COVID-19 lives.? None of us have a ‘crystal ball’ but common sense would suggest that until there is a vaccine, we must continue social-distancing, hand washing and behaving like the virus is still around us. Hopefully, in the coming months, we will see ‘on the spot’ testing that will lead to immediate identifition of those infected?which will help to slow the spread of the virus. It is almost certain that our normal international summer tour bus business will not bounce back until there is a vaccine.? When the travel restrictions are relaxed, there will be a strong regional market, with people wanting?to dine out and take a short get-away vation.
Slowly certain businesses and institutions will be permitted to re-open but with personal distancing rules. When we start to recover, it will not be business as usual, there will be restrictions and likely there will still be some crowd-size restrictions, maybe even temperature taking at larger gatherings.? Sun Peaks Resort LLP has indited that they hope to see a soft opening of some resort activities by July.? Hopefully, fitness, cycling, golf, tennis and hiking activities will be permitted with self-distancing rules that we will still need to respect.? I remain hopeful that by this summer, British Columbians will be travelling on short regional trips, our restaurants will be back in business, shops will be open and we will once again welcome tourists and recreational property owners with new personal-distancing guidelines.
By mid-November 2020, our slopes will again be covered with fresh blankets of powder and skiing will be back on track.?I see the new Crystal Lift has arrived in the parking lot so there will be a new lift for the coming ski season.? Hopefully, international skiers will be travelling again by 2021 but I am certain that we will see our many British Columbian and Washington State skiing friends back in Sun Peaks.? It may take time to fully bounce back but bounce back we will.
Thank you all. Please look after your neighbours, play safely, and stay healthy.
